PomPom Flying Bats

HAPPY OCTOBER! 

Are you just as excited about Halloween as I am?  If you're here - you must be.  Halloween is my favorite time of year - it's no secret.  That's why I host the 13 Days of Handmade Halloween series on my blog EVERY YEAR!  It's just a group of us creative gals, getting together and sharing how to make crafty things with Halloween scare....I mean flair ;)

If you aren't sure what the series is all about check out some of the awesome posts from years past.  In the meantime, I'm kicking things off with a very easy wall decor idea!

You know I'm a pompom making queen.  I can spit these babies out at the drop of a dime.  So, it was only fitting that I share how I made these!  Let's get started

Supplies you will need:

Yarn

PomPom maker

Glittered Foam Sheet

Googly Eyes

Hot Glue

Bat template (you can download and print out here)

Adhesive foam 

To start, trace and cut out your image using the bat template.  

Next, once your bat is cut out, set it aside and start working on making your pompom.  You will only need to make a small size.  I always use a clover pompom maker for my pompoms but there are tons of ways these can be made.  Just search on Google for how to make a pompom.

Once your pompom is made, you can trim and shape the excess yarn to create a well formed pompom - it isn't necessary to do this but, I just like my pompoms a little round.

Next attach your pompom 'body' to the center of the bat allowing the wings and ears to stick out from behind.  You can add the googly eyes at this point.

Finally, add your pompom bats to the wall.  I placed mine on the wall to look as if the bats were flying all willy nilly, as I suppose bats do.  You can anchor the wings into place with an adhesive foam dot to make them look as if they have some movement.

That's that!  I love this idea, these bats are super adorable....you can also hang them to the ceiling if you'd like.  Just make sure to keep a ten end on the pompom ball!

Make Your Own Fidget Spinner Display Stand

Are your kids totally into the fidget spinner craze?  I know mine are.  We definitely have quite a few of them all over the house...which means, mine are always looking for their spinners.  This got me thinking, they need a great way to store or display their spinners.  Luckily, I received an offer from my friends at Oriental Trading Company to share some creative ideas using spinners.  So....I am.

I knew I wanted an easy way they could display the spinners creatively.  All summer, my kids have been watching videos on how to modify or customize their spinners.  I found my solution - a wooden frame, a metal hook, and paint.

My kids were super excited about this craft.  I hadn't told them that I had a box full of new fidget spinners for them.  We worked on this on a Sunday afternoon and it provided a few hours of fun away from video games and bickering....and bad snacking.  I had the kids sand down the edges of the wooden frames to avoid splinters.

Once sanded to smooth, they painted their frames.  My kids got so creative...my son used his favorite video game character, Sonic the Hedgehog as inspiration for his frames.  My daughter wanted to do paint splatter technique on hers.

Once the frames dried completely, we used a bed of E6000 to adhere the frame backer in place.  You will need to allow time for the glue to dry and set - about 20-30 minutes.

Once the frames were completely dried and set, the metal disk was glued in place and the magnetic hook set in place.  You can also make the frames without the use of a washer and just glue the magnet to the frame backer.  The washer just gives the hook extra support.

Once done, the kids were able add the spinners to the hook.  There's a small peg in the back of the square wooden frames that allowed each frame to stand up.  A picture hook can also be added to the back if you want to hang the frame on a wall.

This spinners frame display is definitely an easy project to make and a great summer craft!  Not only do they make a great way to store the spinners, but they're a great way for kids to showcase their artistic talents!  I'm sure we'll be creating more of these in the days to come as my kids come up with creative and unique ways to customize their fidget spinners!

Upcycled Halloween Popcorn Boo Gift Box

It's no secret that Halloween is my favorite time of the year! So, I was way too excited when I found out I was participating in Laura Kelley's Annual Halloween Popcorn Box Blog Party. It's so fun to see what everyone comes up with. Laura sent a bunch of fun goodies along with the World Market popcorn box. Everyone is asked to share a unique way to dress up the box for Halloween and here is what I created!

Decorating the box was so easy, I found a bunch of Halloween stickers and embellishments at the craft store and pulled some scrapbook paper out of my stash.  The original box was red and white and I definitely wanted to give it a Halloween feel.  So, I simply traced around the flattened box onto solid and patterned paper and pieced each side together with double sided tape.

I love making paper rosettes...they have such an old vintage charm to them and since my stickers were Victorian in style, I knew the rosette would be perfect.  I also added a bit of crepe paper sprinkled with diamond dust to the back of the rosette!

To finish the box off, I just hot glued the pompom trim that Laura sent me and added a mini paperclip along with a kitty die cut with a pin clip.

Remember those goodies I mentioned earlier that Laura sent along with the box?  I used those too. Laura has some really adorable die cuts that she created for Sizzix and that little kitty that I stuck in the top of the box is one of them.  She also sent along some Udderly Smooth handcream, stickers and pencils from Oriental Trading and felt & trim from Kunin Felt along with a few other treats!  All of those items went into my box.  I can't wait to give this away to a special friend for a Halloween Boo Gift!
